Stop #51: Albany, NY

Stop #51: This was the first time on this entire trip that I hadn’t booked a place to stay before setting out in the direction of where I wanted to end up. screen-shot-2016-10-19-at-7-02-43-pm

And wouldn’t you know, it backfired. I knew that I wanted to stay around Albany, based on the distance from Erie, along the route to New Hampshire. I didn’t have any luck finding a campsite in my initial search, which was odd, so I asked Dad to see if he could find a place. He also didn’t have any luck and told me I was “screwed.” Thanks, Daddo. At this point, I threw up my hands and booked a hotel. Kind of a cop-out for the last night on the road, but oh well.

On the way to Albany, I stopped and had lunch with a friend in Rochester. It was great to see him and I’m glad we could make the timing work. Luna got to play in the park and I got to stretch my legs.

The drive was beautiful. Getting into prime leaf peeping season.

I had a really difficult time parking the camper in the hotel parking lot, if that’s any consolation for not camping on our last night. There were cars everywhere, but I managed to get it into two spots. Oops…

I asked the front desk if there were campgrounds around (out of curiosity) and the attendant said no, not for at least an hour drive. At least I hadn’t missed something obvious. I felt vindicated that my search was not half-assed.

It was also pretty late and dark upon arrival, so I got Luna settled and went and grabbed us some dinner. I spent most of the rest of the night organizing and for some reason, I turned the tv on. This is the first time on this trip that I’ve turned any tv on other than to watch the first presidential debate. I watch virtually zero tv at home (other than Game of Thrones and The Leftovers), so it’s not that much of a surprise. Perhaps I was subconsciously re-acclimating myself to normal society. I watched an episode of Modern Family, which is typically pretty funny in my opinion, and then Black-ish, which I had never seen before and I’m not sure how anyone watches that show. I digress…

Last big day of driving tomorrow!

Lesson of the Day: Trust your habits. Don’t turn on the tv. You’ll get sucked in and end up watching a subpar sitcom.
