Stop #14: Crescent City, CA

From Lincoln City, Oregon, we drove down to Crescent City, CA which is near part of the Redwood National Forest. The drive was long and we made a few stops including the Sea Lion caves in Florence, Oregon. Unfortunately, this was another stop that wouldn’t allow Luna to partake in the main attraction so Jackie just went down.

In total, the drive was about 255 miles which took us about 7 hours. Much of the drive was very scenic, oscillating between seascapes and mountainsides.

Once we got to the campsite, we quickly set up and then took off to see some Redwoods. The closest were in the Jedidiah Smith Park. They were pretty breathtaking.

We then got some terrific Thai food from what looked like a biker bar (thank you Yelp).

The next morning, we were heading towards the Sonoma and Napa area of California, but made some stops along the way, including the Trees of Mystery in Klamath, CA which has featured a giant talking Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox, Babe. Here we went on a walking tour and sky tour in the gondolas.

Jackie has never been skiing so this was quite the experience for her. Made her a wee bit nervous. Oops!

We also stopped at The Famous One Log House:

and The Avenue of the Giants.

Unfortunately, we got to our site in Petaluma, CA too late to go to the Airstream store to get the parts Mike put on hold so we suffered through another night of the water drama. We did get some delicious salads from the Henny Penny. No – NOT the gas station store. That’s what I thought too. It was a 24 hr diner with giant chickens out front. We really don’t have enough giant figurines in the Northeast. I think we should do something about that.

Lesson of the Day: Take the scenic detours. You get so see some pretty great stuff. What’s the rush anyway?
